In the summer a good mate said to me we need to get our boys not to worry about who we play, and to let the opposition worry about us.
Tonight we played a talented team that are used to winning games and very rarely lose. We changed things around a bit having played the same team on Sunday.
I asked the boys before the game to simply work hard, play their football and incorporate the work Chris has been doing in training around defending as a team in a tight formation. The boys took everything on board and more.
We were first to the ball 9 out of 10 times. We won our individual battles all over the park. We played some neat football and we were clinical in front of goal.
From 1-11 we were positive and focused and everybody did their jobs to what we asked. An early goal and good finish from Isaac after great work from Jett and Joel gave the boys an early confidence boost.
Spirited and resolute defending from the team, organised by Oz and Sam was fantastic to see. I lost count of how many headers we had to compete for and we won most of them!
Henry, Jett and Ernie nullified their main threats in the middle of the park producing countless blocks, tackles and then breaking us free. Emmanuel, Charlie and Joel terrorised their defence on the wings with their pace and trickery. Isaac battled and used his strength to bring our boys into the game and create chances on the counter.
The opposition eventually abandoned their usual neat style of football and started bombarding us with long balls and they got a goal from a brilliant free kick from distance.
Normally this would see the boys heads drop but we came out second half with the same grit and determination and we went in front again after a great strike from Charlie who never stopped running!
Ralph in an unfamiliar position dug in and used his strength to prevent the opposition getting back on level terms.
Noah made his debut for the Saturday team and was like a rock, with his extra pace being a huge asset to us defensively.
The last 10 minutes was nervy but there was no need to worry, the boys were outstanding, Sam made a great save after watching some 5 a side!! The sheer will to win was their for all to see and they came off absolutely buzzing at full time. The reaction from the parents was great too and thanks again for all your support.
We’ve had some great games over the years and tonight was a performance that I think the boys need huge credit from. These are a top team but so are the VIKINGS!
